Blogging Checklist – What To Do Before You Hit Publish

I’ve got a blogging checklist for practically every activity that I do, and it helps to make sure that I’m not missing out any important steps, and that I’m keeping on top of everything that will allow my site to grow.

This one that I’m sharing right here is hugely useful, and it ensures that you have all the right things in place before you go ahead and click publish.

Here’s your blogging checklist to refer back to every time you have a fresh piece of content that you want to share with the world…

Check for any spelling or grammar mistakes

Okay, so this might seem glaringly obvious, and a standard that you already have imprinted in your mind though. Even if you’re a total stickler for spelling and grammar though, it can be really easy to miss small errors if you’re focusing on a lot of content.

There’s nothing more embarrassing than having a reader point out a glaring error, so make sure you do one final proofread before you send the content out on to the internet.

Use an SEO plugin to optimise for search

Search engines like Google can be excellent for driving traffic to your blog, but you do have to do a little work behind the scenes to make sure that you’re increasing your blog’s chances or being found and ranking for relevant keywords.

The simplest way to do this is to install a plugin such as Yoast SEO. This will help you to select a targeted keyword, and ensure that you have all your bases covered before you publish your post. Over time, this can really skyrocket the amount of traffic you receive.

Add a pinnable image for Pinterest

Pinterest is another great source of traffic, and it makes sense to add an image to your post that gives you the best possible chances of grabbing attention on the social media/search engine hybrid.

Of course, there’s much debate about what this entails. I personally find that bright pictures with clear and bold type work really well. Be sure that carefully monitor what works for you, so you can learn and grow.

Include internal and external links

Linking appropriately within your posts is important for a number of reasons. It can help you search engine rankings, it can increase your page views, and most importantly, it can help you to create excellent content that signposts your readers to all the right places.

You’ll typically want to include links to your own posts, where relevant, so readers can delve into the topic further. It also make sense to include links to external sites if you’re referencing research or resources.

Make sure your headline is as compelling as possible

Your headline is hugely powerful, so don’t just leave this to chance and go with the first thing that enters your head. It needs to be thoughtful, considered, attention grabbing, and intrigue building.

Writing good headlines is an art form in its own right, and it’s something that requires plenty of practice. Check out this useful article on 19 ways to write clickable blog post titles.

If you go through this blogging checklist before you publish your posts, it’s going to help to ensure that you’re putting your best work out there, and that you’re increasing your chances of getting it seen by all the right people.

Is there anything else that you always do before you publish a post?
